Medical Dermatology

At Georgia Skin Specialists, we offer comprehensive evaluation and treatment for adult and pediatric dermatological conditions. We recognize that dermatology is a complicated and dynamic field of medicine with rapidly expanding treatment options for all types of skin disease. The numerous ways the body expresses illness, systemic abnormalities, hormone fluctuations, and sun exposure are all manifested in visible changes to the skin, and as specialists in the field of dermatology, our providers have the power of education and experience to read those visible changes.

At your visit with us, we will evaluate your skin concerns and develop a customized treatment plan to optimize the health and wellness of your skin.

Why schedule a skin exam?

We highly recommend that patients schedule regular full body skin examinations as a means for us to monitor changes in one’s skin and to catch potential problems in their initial stages. Skin cancer has become the most prevalent cancer in the United States, and early detection and treatment are paramount for the safest outcome and the best cosmetic result. Because of this, skin cancer awareness is among our providers’ primary concerns.

At Georgia Skin Specialists, our providers perform comprehensive full body skin examinations and incorporate technological resources to carefully examine and map patients’ moles and other lesions to be monitored. During your skin exam with Georgia Skin Specialists, our providers will assess your overall skin wellness and ensure you are taking the right protective measures and precautions to prevent skin cancer.

Dermatology Conditions We Treat

Our physicians can treat a wide variety of issues, including the following:

Skin Cancer

Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinomas are the less serious types of skin cancer and make up 95% of all cases. These rarely metastasize (spread to other parts of the body) and are not usually life-threatening, but they can create a degree of local tissue destruction if left on the body untreated. Malignant Melanoma is the most serious skin cancer and causes 75% of all skin cancer deaths. Although Melanoma has many potential causes, the two most important factors are sun exposure and genetics. Early detection of Melanoma is key to a good recovery, as it does have the possibility of metastasis and ultimately death if left untreated. Statistics show that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime and therefore, it is crucial that you educate yourself and regularly seek the care of a dermatologist.

Acne

While it’s commonly thought of as a “teen” condition, acne can affect people of all ages. Each case of acne is different and there is no “one size fits all” treatment plan. That’s why our providers take the extra time to evaluate and discuss underlying causes or triggers of acne to ensure that patients are informed of potential environmental, dietary, or hormonal factors that may be at play. This knowledge, combined with the most up to date medications and procedures, ensure that our patients achieve the highest level of care in obtaining clearer skin.

Eczema / Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, is a common problem affecting kids and adults of all ages. Many people with the condition have skin that becomes very dry and itchy. Scratching at the eczema can lead to redness, scarring, skin damage, and even infection. Our board-certified medical dermatologists in Atlanta can recommend lifestyle changes and prescribe the most cutting edge therapies to control the condition.

Rashes

Allergic contact dermatitis is a hypersensitivity reaction that manifests in the skin. It can be caused by soaps, fragrances, laundry detergents, cosmetics, and other sources. Patients with allergic contact dermatitis break out in a red, itchy rash in a localized area. This type of allergy makes life miserable and causes stress, as well as costing patients time and money as they try and blindly replace skin care products to eliminate the problem. Georgia Skin Specialists will work to pinpoint the cause of the rash through Patch Testing, and offer a wide range of treatment options to help alleviate the problem.

Other types of skin rashes can manifest as a result of allergies, infections, immune disorders, heat or prescription medications. Some of these rashes will not clear up on their own, and require professional treatment for patients to find relief. These rashes include:

  • Drug rashes
  • Poison ivy
  • Impetigo
  • Athlete’s foot
  • Ringworm
  • Hives
  • Shingles

medical rosacea

Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition that most commonly affects adults with fair skin. This is a chronic condition that causes redness, visible blood vessels, acne-like papules and pustules, and enlargement of oil glands on the nose, a deforming condition called Rhinophyma. If left untreated, rosacea can lead to progressive redness of the skin causing patients to always appear flushed or sunburned. Rosacea can also impact the eyes and cause long term damage. Our providers work with patients to identify unique rosacea triggers and devise treatment plans according to each patient’s particular presentation.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease of the skin that typically presents as scaly red rashes. It typically manifests on the scalp, torso, elbows and knees, but can also occur in skin fold areas including the underarms, groin, and buttock areas causing significant discomfort. It is critical to diagnose and treat psoriasis as it can also affect the joints, a condition called psoriatic arthritis, and it indicates a higher risk for other underlying medical conditions. The providers at Georgia Skin Specialists use the most cutting-edge treatments for psoriasis and collaborate with specialists such as Rheumatologists to keep patients with psoriasis living their clearest and most comfortable lives.
